A few weeks ago, when the Odyssey was still steaming along and the Sharks still looked like strong Stanley Cup contenders, I had a daydream. The Stanley Cup Finals were coming to San Jose for the first time ever. The opponent was Ottawa. And in my dream, my favorite singer-songwriter (and Sharks fan) Neil Young was there to sing O Canada before the game.
Well, the Sharks didn't get close to the finals. Even worse, hated rival Anaheim got there instead. Sure enough, Ottawa is their opponent. And last night, before game 1 of the finals, my dream came true, but in a bizarre, distorted way:
Neil Young wasn't there to sing, but his old buddy Steven Stills was.
He sang the Star Spangled Banner, rather than O Canada.
And the real nightmare: it wasn't the Sharks in San Jose; it was the Ducks, in Anaheim.
Sometimes, dreams do come true, but not exactly the way you imagined them.
