Last Saturday was the 131st running of the Kentucky Derby, and it featured the unlikeliest horses ever to finish in the top 4. The winning horse, Giacomo, paid 52-1, the second biggest longshot winner in Derby history. The second-place horse was 70-1. If you bet $2 on the two winning horses (this combination is called the exacta) you won $9,814.80.
The third-place horse was merely 4-1, but the fourth place finisher's odds were 29-1. So, a $1 bet on the top four horses in order was worth $864,253.50. Seven people made that bet, including one lucky soul who lost, then found his ticket.
