Or perhaps the research has confused cause and effect: maybe people who are fat drink more diet soda because they drink more soda, and they're trying to control their weight.

Perhaps. But, that wouldn't explain the research where rats who were given artificial sweeteners gained weight.

While it may be true that diet soda may increase your appetite, that doesn't necessarily mean you will gain weight. Sure, you may consume more calories than you would if you drank regular soda, but those extra calories you consume will still be fewer than the calories you'd consume with regular soda.

http://www.prevention.com/article/0,5778,s1-4-60-48-2589-1,00.html has some information on this. Sure, the study that was referenced only included 41 people, but at least there's some actual data given. The people who drank diet sodas lost weight, and the people who drank regular sodas gained weight. Gasp!

We don't know how many rats were involved in the study, nor do we know the weight gain/loss between the two sets of rats. We don't know how much sweetener was given to the two sets. There are just two many unknowns to draw a definite conclusion.

Given what little information we have of the rat study, I can think of three possible conclusions off the top of my head.

1) Artifical sweeteners increase your appetite, as concluded above, and make you gain weight. After all, the rats given artificial sweeteners ate more than those given sugar.

2) Sugar decreases your appetite while artificial sweeteners slightly increase it.

3) Sugar decreases your appetite while artificial sweeteners have no effect.

To correctly state that diet sodas can make you gain weight, we'd need to know the following:

a) The number of extra food calories consumed by the artificial sweetener rats.
b) The number of calories in sugar fed to the sugar rats.

If b is greater than a, which I suspect it will be, then drinking diet sodas will still cause you to lose more weight than drinking the equivalent in regular sodas.

Since it may be that consuming real sugar decreases your appetite, another study would need to be performed comparing two additional groups of rats. The first group would be given diet soda. The second would be given water. If the first group eats more then, yes, it's apparent that diet soda increases your appetite. If they eat about the same, then it just means that real sugar decreases it, though most likely not by enough to counteract the calories supplied by the sugar.

Weight Loss

I have written an article about this subject as it is so interesting but the evidence is pretty overwhelming. I believe stongly that drinking pop like sweets in moderation is the key and to focus on water. I do not believe diet pop really effects weight that much but I will research it very closely.

I think the artificial sweeteners, some of them, are supposed to increase metabolism.

These studies miss a critical point, for the scientific method or political correctness. That is fat-people eat fat-foods. While the human body stores calories on its own as fat -- sugar and protein require more energy and take longer to become storable fat. Dairy fat, animal fat and saturated fat all store fast and melt slow.

One key role soda plays is that it is highly acidic and often provides phosphates. Like peanut butter digests better than peanuts, saturated fats and animal fats are absorbed much more quickly in this environment. The HCl pump is fueled by the sugar and the cholesterol produces bile.

The biggest issue the WHO, FDA and other concerned parties have is that the worlds protein/fat sources that provide other nutrients are not easily realigned with "omega-6", vegetarian, seafood markets. Protein already carries a premium at the checkout.

High-fructose corn syrup is an easy target. The industry bounces. The price of carb foods is on a per calorie basis. It easily becomes the staple of a modern diet. It does not however inevitably lead to obesity however. The lack of carb foods can even undermine vigorous exercise that is key to weight reduction by natural metabolism realignment.
